Japan, Israel want to forge investment pact this year
YUKIHIRO SAKAGUCHI, Nikkei staff writer

JERUSALEM -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, agreed here Monday to seek a bilateral investment treaty this year as a steppingstone to a free trade deal.
Netanyahu proposed setting year's end as the target for concluding an investment pact, to which the visiting Abe assented. The two leaders confirmed they would instruct officials to speed up working-level talks.
Such treaties spell out protections for investors and other ground rules that companies like to know before deploying capital in another country.
Corporate Japan is keen on doing business in Israel, home to high-tech players in software, cybersecurity, health care and other industries. Executives from nearly 30 companies, including big electronics and food makers, accompanied Abe on his visit. Abe hopes to see the two countries' economic relationship flourish through greater interaction among business leaders and other exchanges, he said in a news conference with Netanyahu. At a meeting Sunday, the Israeli prime minister told Abe his country is ready to move toward an investment pact and a free trade agreement.
Earlier this month, Netanyahu's cabinet approved a plan for deepening economic ties with Japan that calls for tens of millions of dollars in investment over three years. It also aims for a 45% increase in Japanese tourists by 2017.
Israel imported $1.11 billion of Japanese goods in 2013, much of it in the form of automobiles, electronics and chemical products, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. The country's exports to Japan reached $720 million, with industrial and medical equipment, machinery and electronics leading the way.http://asia.nikkei.com/Politics-Economy/International-Relations/Japan-Israel-want-to-forge-investment-pact-this-yearž
